Bahamas Ministry of Tourism director general Joy Jibrilu has been named Caribbean Tourism Director of The Year in the most recent Caribbean Travel Awards.

Expert stewardship and deft handling of the post-Dorian climate in The Bahamas were just a few of the attributes that landed Jibrilu the prestigious title of Caribbean Tourism Director of The Year, according to the Caribbean Travel Awards.

The Caribbean region will grow by 1.3 per cent in 2020, according to a recent report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Following six consecutive years of slow growth, Latin America and the Caribbean faces more challenges in the coming year, according to the organisation which said a slump in domestic demand and fragile international markets will continue the deceleration trend in the short-term.

Tourism stakeholders from around the region will gather in Nassau later this month for one of the biggest tourism tradeshows in the region. Organisers of the Caribbean Travel Marketplace, which takes place at the Baha Mar resort from January 21-23, say interest has been strong this year as buyers and suppliers from around the world register to attend.

Following its recent acquisition of Bank of The Bahamas’ (BOB) $103 million trust, LENO Trust Ltd has named veteran private wealth and trust professional Dianne Bingham as the firm’s new managing director.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed December 9, 2019, between the University of The Bahamas (UB) and the Tourism Development Corp at UB President’s Boardroom.

The collaboration aims to foster a vibrant and resilient Bahamian tourism sector, and also deepen the university’s education and research impact.

MSC Cruises recently welcomed the first passengers to its new Bahamas destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The island, part of the Bimini chain, has been converted from a former sand extraction site to an eco-tourism resort which includes a spa, Bahamian village, restaurants, and activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking.

At a recent Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation (MOTA) global sales and marketing meeting in Florida, the top executives of MOTA met with the emerging leaders of their tourism team to discuss and prepare them for the future of the tourism industry.

Director general at MOTA Joy Jibrilu, and deputy director general Ellison Thompson, joined executive director of global sales Bridgette King, for the three-day gathering that brought together the first cadre of talented young professionals that will help propel MOTA into the future.

“It is predicted that 38.6 billion devices will be connected by 2025, and 50 billion by 2030. In 2019, the number of devices connected is more than twice the size of the world population. Let this sink in.”
