Kathleen Smith has become the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA), taking over seven months after outgoing CEO Usman Saadat stepped down from the position.

The new CEO, who will serve for five years, has a wealth of experience in the field. She joined URCA’s predecessor the Public Utilities Commission in 2000 and, from there, worked her way up the ranks to become URCA’s Director of Policy and Regulation.

In a statement, URCA commented: “Institutional capacity building is one of URCA’s core priorities. The appointment of Mrs Smith as URCA CEO underscores the Authority’s organisational principle to build local capacity, as URCA continues to shape its leadership and staffing resources based on the regulatory demands for specialised professional needs in economics, finance, communications, law and telecommunications engineering.”
