Joining Mario Carey Realty (MCR) as a licensed real estate sales agent, qualified architect Ashley Brown is following a long family tradition.

Ministry for Grand BahamaBrown’s great-grandfather, Ernest John Henry “Harry” McPherson, sold his first piece of property in The Bahamas in the late 1930s.

A generation later, McPherson’s daughter, Mary, married David “Lester” Brown who followed in his father-in-law’s footsteps.

Internal company audits as a means of preventing fraud must be improved in The Bahamas, a partner at a leading accounting firm told delegates attending a one-day Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) seminar held at the British Colonial Hilton June 26.

According to Kendrick Christie, a partner at the accounting firm Grant Thornton, it is an area that needs more focus.

The new Minister of State for Investments Khaalis Rolle has vowed to create a better business environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in The Bahamas, saying the problems of insufficient capital and support are holding the country back.

“Unless we really go beyond paying lip service to smaller businesses, [which are] the engine of this economy, we will continue to have the problems we have,” the Minister told attendees at the Global Trade and Financing Seminar held in Nassau earlier in the year. “The biggest barriers are access to capital and access to technical support.”
