Prime Minister Perry Christie has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to regain majority control of the Bahamas Telecommunications Co (BTC).

He made the statement during a press conference July 31, 2012, in the committee room at the House of Assembly.

Prime Minister Perry Christie has appointed Picewell Forbes, the Member of Parliament for Central and South Andros, as The Bahamas Non-Resident High Commissioner to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The Prime Minister presented Forbes with his Instrument of Appointment during the official announcement ceremony in the House of Assembly Committee room on July 31, 2012.

Forbes will be accredited to the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, and to all Commonwealth Caribbean countries as High Commissioner. However, he will operate his duties from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nassau.

Major Bahamas hotels report occupancy gains in June

According to preliminary statistics released by the Bahamas Hotel Association and The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the 14-major New Providence hotels recorded a 77.7 per cent occupancy rate for June 2012 compared to 68.7 per cent in June 2011.

According to preliminary statistics released by the Bahamas Hotel Association (BHA) and The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (MOT), the 14-major New Providence hotels recorded a 77.7 per cent occupancy rate for June 2012 compared to 68.7 per cent in June 2011.

Room revenue increased by 8.3 per cent on the strength of a 12.6 per cent increase in room nights sold. However, the June 2012 average daily rate (ADR) was $228.04 compared to $237.05 in June 2011.

Prime Minister Perry Christie toured the site of the Cove Eleuthera Resort at the beginning of the week. The resort is owned by New Orleans developer Sidney Torres IV and set is to open in November.

Prime Minister Perry Christie toured the site of the new Cove Eleuthera Resort set to open in November on the island of Eleuthera. New Orleans entrepreneur and French Quarter hotelier Sidney Torres IV recently purchased the 32-acre ocean front property.

Minister of Youth Sports and Culture Daniel Johnson met with Sports Ministers and senior officials from 43 Commonwealth nations in London on July 25 for the sixth Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics for the UK.

During the meeting, the delegates strongly endorsed a set of guidelines that will assist governments to strengthen sport development and incorporate sport-based activities into development programmes.
