Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe will head a delegation of government and private sector officials to the International Association of Gaming Advisors (IAGA) summit in Singapore, October 23-25.

Beginning today, a separate delegation will hold a series of meetings in Malaysia, hosted by the Genting Group.

“The purpose of the trip is for government officials to explore investment opportunities in The Bahamas in the tourism, industrial, financial services, and shipping sectors, and trade,” said a Ministry of Tourism spokesperson.

Prime Minister Perry Christie said during the opening ceremony of the new international terminals October 16 that the modernization of the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is a lasting tribute to the legacy of Sir Lynden Pindling.

The LPIA expansion project comprises three stages. Stage 1, the US departure terminal, was completed in March 2011. Stage 2 is the new International and US Departure Gates and International Arrivals Terminal, opened this week.

The Bahamas government has signed Letters of Intent and a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd and Sunwing Travel Group to renovate and reopen the 503-room Reef Village on Grand Bahama.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Perry Christie during a press conference October 17 at the resort (pictured below).

Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort and Casino and the Ministry of Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) October 16 for the North Andros High School’s Agriculture Department to provide locally grown produce to the resort.

Glenn Sampert, general manager at the Sheraton Nassau resort, and Keith Saunders, senior education officer in the Ministry of Education, signed the MoU.

Airport revamp key to economic growth

The completion of Stage 2 of Lynden Pindling International Airport's redevelopment will help spur economic growth in tandem with other projects throughout the country, Prime Minister Perry Christie said during a ceremony marking the occasion this week. Improvements were made to the terminal's physical space, services and amenities as the second stage of a planned three-stage, $409 million redevelopment of The Bahamas' largest airport.
