The Central Bank of The Bahamas has released a quarterly statement on recent economic and regulatory developments – providing an update on efforts to create the first Bahamian credit bureau, the upcoming annual AML/CFT conference and Basel II & III implementation.

CRIF Bahamas received its credit bureau licence in December and is set to launch this year. “The credit bureau will offer significant benefits to both lenders and borrowers, through better and fairer access to credit information,” according to The Central Bank which will collaborate with CRIF on financial literacy initiatives to raise public awareness.

Developers of the recently announced up-market resort community for South Abaco have committed to inject $7 million into a business development fund for Bahamian entrepreneurs seeking to establish businesses in the project.

The commitment is a part of the heads of agreement signed February 13 between the government of The Bahamas and Tyrsoz Family Holdings Ltd for the resort development.

Sandy Point airport will be expanded and enhanced under the heads of agreement signed between the government of The Bahamas and Tyrsoz Family Holdings Ltd.

The existing airport will be improved in order to accommodate private jets and make it fully operational, inclusive of a fixed base operation, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis noted at the agreement signing ceremony 13 February at St Martin’s Episcopal Church Hall.

The Cabinet Office has announced that Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis will travel to Bridgetown, Barbados today to attend the 31st Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The Prime Minister will lead a delegation of senior government officials to the two-day meeting (February 18-19), including Minister of Foreign Affairs Darren Henfield; Reuben Rahming, Bahamas Ambassador to CARICOM States; and Travis Robinson, MP.

The government of The Bahamas signed a Heads of Agreement with Tyrsoz Family Holdings Ltd, February 13, 2020 for the development of a $300 million project, one of the largest undertakings for South Abaco.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis in his remarks said that building the project on Abaco demonstrates the strong confidence investors have in the government and the country.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said The Bahamas is committed to the economic partnership agreement that was signed with the UK late last year and takes effect after the Brexit transition period ends 31 December 2020.

The agreement ensures trade continuity with the UK following on from the 10-year-old Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) signed between the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) and the European Union.

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has praised The Bahamas for its recovery efforts after Hurricane Dorian, highlighting the country’s successful fiscal policies and strong performance in tourism.

In the wake of the devastating category 5 storm, the CDB approved a $50 million policy-based loan to The Bahamas.

Speaking at the bank’s annual news conference this week, CDB director of economics Dr Justin Ram said: “The approval recognised the government’s ongoing reform programme to maintain fiscal discipline and build resilience to natural disasters.”
