Five years ago, the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) introduced an award to recognize persons who have contributed specifically to the development of individuals within the financial services industry through a mentoring role.

The Mentor of the Year (MOTY) became a part of the annual FSI Excellence Awards Programme that BFSB had introduced in 2001. This year, BFSB has announced that the fifth Mentor of the Year Award is being presented to Edward Virgil II, acting manager at the East Bay Street Branch of Commonwealth Bank Ltd.

The MOTY Award will be presented on the occasion of the 2014 Gala Awards Banquet on November 14.

BFSB chief executive officer Aliya Allen extends personal congratulations to Virgil who has contributed to the development of persons in the industry through guidance and advice and by example.

Allen indicates that BFSB looks forward to engaging him, as it rolls out the mentoring component of its latest initiative – the Bahamas Millennials Society, a membership-based programme for young professionals within the industry.

Prime Minister Perry Christie announced October 31 that a new company will take over $100 million in troubled commercial loans from Bank of The Bahamas, thereby removing this risk from BOB’s books and allowing for expansion. Read his statement here.

The 19th Caribbean Multi-National Business Conference will be held in The Bahamas, November 6-9, at Sandals Royal Resort in Nassau.
