The first heavy rains make landfall on New Providence earlier today as Hurricane Sandy heads towards Nassau.

Transportation and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin has said that the expansion of the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau is of vital importance to the Bahamas' economy and social cohesion. Watch an address by Hanna-Martin at the opening ceremony of the new International Terminal.

The US Northeast from Washington to New England, including New York City, may be at risk from Hurricane Sandy by early next week as it heads towards The Bahamas.
