Working groups offer input on new proposed FS bills

Insolvency Practitioners Group, among others, contributed expertise to efforts to modernize and improve existing legislation under the Companies Act and International Business Companies Act. The consequent draft bill is now in circulation. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs John Delaney contributed a compendium of financial services industry bills to the Senate last week. The bills included those relating to international compliance and business regulation.

Addressing the Senate on Wednesday last week, the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs John Delaney stressed the importance of the financial services industry to the economy and the government’s role in regulating and promoting it.

“The industry is recognized as representing an estimated 15-20 per cent of the gross domestic product for The Bahamas, second in terms of economic impact to the tourism industry,” he said.

“The government’s primary role is that of regulator. However, as the second industry of our economy, the government must also facilitate the growth, development and general well-being of the sector.”

“So, in addition to ensuring that it is well regulated, the government seeks to facilitate growth and development of the industry by bringing to Parliament the proposed legislation.”

Kerzner backed beach improvement project commences – photos

The Kerzner International sponsored Montagu Foreshore Improvement project will see a set of stone groynes put in place to restore a beach area just east of downtown Nassau. The project is one of a number of revitalization projects happening in and around the capital.

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The restoration of the Montagu Beach in New Providence has commenced.

The work, which is part of the Montagu Foreshore Improvement Project, consists of the construction of groynes that will be backfilled with sand.

The restored beach will extend along the shoreline from Fort Montagu to the fishermen’s dock in the east.

The Bahamas is set to make its first major foray into sports tourism with the arrival of Bahamas Speed Week, which kicks off next week in New Providence.

Praising the organizers and sponsors of the event, which will see some 40 iconic cars take part in a series of races, Minister for Tourism and Aviation Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace said its success would boost the Bahamas’ brand “immensely” and act as a model for future projects in the sports tourism niche.

The agreement between Canada and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for the exchange of information on tax matters entered into force on November 16, 2011. The agreement was signed on June 17, 2010. 

Ground-broken on $75-million health-care project

Work has begun on a new critical care unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau. The initiative represents “the single largest investment in health-care infrastructure” in The Bahamas, according to the Prime Minister.

Hailed as “the single largest investment in health-care infrastructure” the government broke ground this week on a world-class Critical Care Block at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

“Today we commence in earnest, the phased redevelopment of the PMH on its present site,” said Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham at the groundbreaking ceremony on November 16. “When completed we expect the PMH will be redeveloped into a 500-bed facility inclusive of a dedicated maternal and child-care wing.”
