Imagine waking up in the waning hours of the night, just as the sun was about to rise over the horizon, on your own private island.

STAR Island Bahamas, found off northern Eleuthera and surrounded by azure waters, miles of beach offers just that experience.

This beautiful and ecofriendly property, which caters to couples, has 9,000 feet of coastline and is a 10-minute ferry ride from picturesque Harbour Island.

STAR, short for Sustainable Terrain And Resources, held its grand opening on April 22. The island only caters to day trips for its beach bar and grill for now. So far, about 300 guests have visited the island.

However, STAR Island Founder and CEO David Sklar said the first overnight accommodation for the island, called “The Nest”, will open in May.

The Nest will be a 650-square foot loft style suite off the beach, which will be perfect for a honeymoon or a secluded romantic escape. The Nest will have views of the entire island and features air-conditioning, a luxurious bathroom and a dining area.

Guests can venture around the island for birdwatching, bonefishing, paddle-boarding, kayaking and sea turtle watching.

“We can deliver a very personalized experience that is a true escape and nobody needs to know where you are or what you’re doing,” Sklar said.

STAR Island will be the perfect place for a destination wedding as well.

The island also boasts its own organically grown vegetables, a solar power water system and electrical system.

STAR Island is “a private destination using off-grid technology to power the entire island. We offer desirable and unique experiences to visitors, while caring for the environment and educating people about real possibilities in sustainable development.”

Sklar said the island is ideal for anyone looking to escape.

“We have a partnership with a seaplane company, Tropic Ocean Airways. We also can provide guests that really want to have a total off the grid experience where they can fly in from anywhere and land right on the island. The plane can come right to the beach,” Sklar added.
