The Bahamas is marking its 40th year of independence with a series of events, including an exhibition match between Tottenham Hotspur and the Jamaican national team on 23 May.
Tickets for the game taking place at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium in Nassau are available online. Other festivities forming part of the celebration – including concerts, regattas and sporting events – will be detailed on a new website launching later this week.
Formerly a British colony, the Bahamas became an independent Commonwealth realm on 10 July 1973, retaining the Queen as monarch. Today, the islands are a popular holiday destination.
Commenting on 2013’s significance, the co-chair of the 40th Independence Anniversary Committee Charles Charter said: ‘This anniversary allows us abundant opportunities to tell and retell our stories to a new generation of Bahamians, who would need to appreciate that the journey to nationhood started long before them but requires that they continue its development.’
