Norwegian Cruise Line's next ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, will spend most of its first winter sailing from New York to The Bahamas and Florida, reports USA Today. The line announced yesterday that the 4,000-passenger vessel, which debuts in May 2013, will operate a series of 25 seven-night cruises to the region starting on October 13, 2013.

USA todayNorwegian Cruise Line’s next ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, will spend most of its first winter sailing from New York to the Bahamas and Florida.

The line today announced the 4,000-passenger vessel, which debuts in May 2013, will operate a series of 25 seven-night cruises to the region starting on Oct. 13, 2013. The ship also will sail two 12-night Southern Caribbean itineraries out of New York on Jan. 5 and 19, 2014, along with two short “Weekend Escape” cruises on Jan. 17 and 31, 2014.

As previously announced, the Norwegian Breakaway will spend its first summer sailing out of New York to Bermuda on a seven-night itinerary. At 144,00 tons, the ship will be the largest ever to be based year-round in the city.

The newly announced Bahamas and Florida cruises will depart on Sundays and include stops in Nassau, Bahamas; Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas; and Port Canaveral, Fla. (gateway to theme park mecca Orlando). The sailings will run through April 27, 2014.

The chief executive officer of The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTC), Geoff Houston, presented the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with a cheque for $250,000 to go toward the Hurricane Irene relief programme.

The presentation was made earlier this week in Nassau.

As 2012 gets underway, the conference and event calendar in The Bahamas is already looking busy.

Kicking off the new season is the 21st Annual Bahamas Business Outlook to be held on January 12 at the Wyndham Nassau Resort.

Experts and business leaders will be addressing the topic of “Vision Beyond Sight: How Ready is The Bahamas to do 21st Century Business?” at the one-day conference.

Keynote speakers this year include Zhivargo Laing, Minister of State for Finance, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism and Aviation, and Algernon Cargill, Director, National Insurance Board.

The third annual International Business and Finance Summit (IBFS) follows shortly after on February 3-5 at the Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour in Marsh Harbour, Abaco.

Bahamas November economic data shows mild recovery

The Monthly Economic and Financial Developments report for November released by The Central Bank of The Bahamas at the end of December shows gains in construction and tourism, as well as a lower overall deficit.

Preliminary data for the Bahamian economy suggests a continuation of the mild recovery momentum during November, according to The Central Bank of The Bahamas.

The Monthly Economic and Financial Developments report for November released at the end of last month suggests that construction output, supported by both foreign investment and public sector infrastructure projects, and tourism activity, helped sustain the recovery towards the end of the year.

“Against this backdrop, and the persistence of high employment levels, the monetary sector outcome continued to be characterized by robust levels of bank liquidity, relatively mild private sector credit expansion and high loan arrears,” the report states.

“The external reserves position contracted, in-line with the seasonal—although muted—firming in consumer demand towards the end of the year, but was sustained at levels in excess of the year-earlier period.”

As investors in the West face a period of wealth preservation rather than wealth accumulation, in the Asia-Pacific region, the newly wealthy are enjoying an unprecedented economic boom.

The Asia-Pacific area posted the strongest regional rate of high-net-worth Individual (HNWI) population growth in 2010 among the top three markets. While HNWI wealth had already overtaken Europe in 2009, Asia-Pacific has now surpassed Europe in terms of HNWI population, expanding 9.7 per cent to 3.3 million, while Europe grew 6.3 per cent to 3.1 million.

On the back of a new Copa Airlines service between Panama City and Nassau, The Bahamas saw substantial growth in visitor arrivals from Latin America during the third quarter, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation.

This was in tandem with an overall trend among airlines to increase airlift to The Bahamas.

With more arrivals than ever, efforts to improve the downtown environment began in earnest over the summer, according to the Prime Minister. With the completion of the new Straw Market due by year’s end, along with the commencement of other key projects on and around Bay Street, historic Nassau is set for a facelift.

In other news, The Central Bank of The Bahamas announced in October that the government had invited applications for Bahamas Registered Stock totaling $60 million.
