The Islands of the World Fashion Showcase (IWFS warning: website audio) will kick off next month, with the newly rebranded event set to take place May 11-12, at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.

After a one-year hiatus, IWFS is ready to re-launch with an opening show expected to rival other international fashion events.

David Rolle's designTen designers representing five countries have confirmed their participation.

They include Bahamians Chelsea Johnson, Courtney McIntosh, David Rolle, Harl Taylor Bag, Latoya Hanna-Moxey and Theo Sealy.

Guyana’s Carol Fraser, Sharleen Logan from St Lucia, Kimon Baptiste of St Vincent and The Grenadines, and Darcel de Vlugt from Trinidad and Tobago will also exhibit their designs.

“It’s our hope to take IWFS to the next level in fashion and the first step is to align the showcase with the industry itself,” says Indira Moss, IWFS production manager. “By hosting two shows each year the designers have the opportunity to get their designs and products on the market in a timely fashion. By doing this, we are ensuring that each designer will get the maximum exposure they need to properly produce for a potentially wider market.”

In the context of improving global economic fundamentals, indications are that the domestic economic recovery was sustained over the review month. Initial data showed gains in key tourism indicators, while foreign investment, combined with public sector infrastructural projects, underpinned the expansion in construction sector output. Consumer price inflation continued to show an upward bias, amid the firming price trends on the international crude oil market. Revised data for the fiscal sector indicated a contraction in the overall deficit for the first six months of FY2011/12, as revenue gains outstripped an increase in spending. In monetary developments, although growth in bank liquidity maintained pace with the year-earlier expansion, the build-up in external reserves was comparatively slowed, amid a public sector-led expansion in Bahamian dollar domestic credit.

Singapore, which has the world’s highest density of wealthy people, had just over 150,000 high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), each worth more than $1million (more than £648,000), by the end of last year, according to new figures.

A forecast by financial consultant Wealth Insight predicts that these individuals will prove key in the expansion of Asia’s banking sector.

In the 10 years to 2010, the report found the total assets managed by the Singapore’s wealth management and private banking sector increased 11-fold. HNWIs now make up 2.9 per cent of Singapore’s population.

In the same period, the number of foreign professionals working in Singapore’s finance industry went up by 9,600, according to the minister of state for manpower, Tan Chuan-Jin.

He said that the number of new employment passes given out to foreigners shows Singapore’s growth as a financial hub in the past decade, especially since 2006.
