Bahamas praised for conservation efforts

During a visit to The Bahamas last month, a team from marine protection group Mission Blue praised the country for its continued commitment to ocean conservation through the 20/20 Caribbean Challenge.

The Bahamas has drawn praise for its conservation efforts from an international body charged with protecting the marine environment.

A team from Mission Blue arrived in The Bahamas last month and were welcomed by Minister of the Environment Kenred Dorsett, as well as members of the Bahamas National Trust and Nature Conservancy.

Kevin Clerey has been appointed as managing director of newly formed International Protector Group Switzerland, which is introducing the new Bahamas Executive Entity to that market for trust advisors.

Clerey (pictured) worked at Credit Suisse for 23 years, including as head of its global trust operations. At Credit Suisse he also oversaw fund administration, and led trust companies in centres such as The Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Guernsey and the Middle- and Far east.

Baha Mar Ltd, which bills itself as the largest resort property in the Western Hemisphere, launched its first global roadshow in Beijing on Tuesday, aiming to attract China’s billionaires.

The $3.5 billion project, located in Nassau, capital of the Bahamas, is being wholly financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and built by China State Construction Engineering Co Ltd.

Covering 400 hectares, the project includes four luxury hotels and other entertainment and sports facilities. It is expected to be completed in 2014.

The newly elected Prime Minister, Perry Christie, delivered the 2012/13 Budget Communication to Parliament May 30.

In his address, he said that the government was not going to propose any increase in taxes on Bahamians and claimed that the budget “unequivocally sets us on the course of change” for the economy.

Bahamas Telecommunications Co (BTC) announced last week that the company has named leading Bahamian business executive Gershan Major to its expanded management team as vice president channels and marketing.

Major, formerly the chief executive officer of Mail Boxes Etc, is the latest in a series of Bahamians to join BTC in top management positions.
