Government to rationalize tariff and excise rates

The government is introducing a number of measures to further rationalize tariff and excise rates, Prime Minister Perry Christie said during his presentation of the 2012/2013 Budget Communication in Parliament last week.

The Prime Minister added that the government also wants to encourage energy efficiency and provide relief to consumers.

The 15th Model United Nations Sessions (MUNS) was held last month at the Wyndham Crystal Palace, Cable Beach.

Co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of The Bahamas and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MUNS annually brings together high school students from around the country, and sometimes from the Turks and Caicos Islands, in a forum to simulate the United Nations General Assembly.

As well as a dedicated ministry, Prime Minister Perry Christie also said that Grand Bahama would receive special tax considerations to help boost tourism. Christie made the comments during his first Budget Communication to Parliament last week.

Ministry for Grand Bahama During his presentation of the 2012/2013 Budget Communication on May 30, Prime Minister Perry Christie said that the government has created the Ministry for Grand Bahama to address that island’s needs. The Prime Minister said the mandate of that ministry is to ensure Grand Bahama receives the maximum benefits from all government initiatives.

Prime Minister Christie said the ministry will develop proposals for the extension of duty-free concessions to east and west Grand Bahama.

Michael Darville has been named Minister for Grand Bahama.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to a mortgage relief programme that will help save the homes of persons who are no longer able to service their loan obligations, because of underemployed, involuntary loss of jobs, or because of chronic illness.

Prime Minister Perry Christie during the presentation of the 2012/2013 Budget Communication in Parliament last week said preliminary discussions with representatives of the clearing banks and other institutional lenders have already been initiated.

Ultrapetrol (Bahamas) Ltd an industrial transportation company serving marine transportation needs has announced the sale of 14 wet and dry barges to a third party in Colombia. The barges are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2012 and will provide the company with proceeds of $20.3 million, of which 50 per cent has been advanced by the buyer.
