Executive vice president of the China State Construction Co told reporters August 22 that the multi-billion dollar Baha Mar project is progressing smoothly and that 25 per cent of the construction work has been completed. He made the comments as Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes toured the construction site.

Decision Science International is showcasing its transport container scanning equipment in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The new technology can detect radioactive and nuclear materials.

Aug. 26/12 (Washington Post) — More than a year after leaving SRA International, Stanton D. Sloane is now spending his time talking cosmic rays as president and chief executive of Chantilly-based Decision Sciences International.

Sloane is promoting the the company’s signature Multi-Mode Passive Detection Systems — or MMPDS, which is now on display at Freeport Container Port in the Bahamas.

Aug. 26/11 (Reuters) –– Buckeye Partners L.P. said on Sunday it had suspended operations at the jetties at the massive BORCO oil storage terminal after a tropical storm watch for Isaac was called earlier for the northwest Bahamas.

“Operations at the jetties are currently suspended as a precaution,” said Kevin Goodwin, a spokesman for the pipeline and terminaling company.

The men’s 4 x 400 metres Olympic gold medal team was welcomed to Eleuthera on August 22, with a day of celebrations and a tour of the island.

Starting at the North Eleuthera Airport, medal winners Chris Brown, Ramon Miller, Demetrius Pinder and Michael Matthieu then travelled to Harbour Island for breakfast at the Tingum Village Hotel followed by a motorcade.

The tour then took in the Glass Window Bridge, Gregory Town, Hatchet Bay and Governor’s Harbour, where a short ceremony was held.

They then continued into Rock Sound and Wemyss’ Bight, home of Chris Brown, where a street was named in his honour. (BIS Photos/Patrick Hanna)

The 4x400m relay Olympic gold medal winning team will receive expenses paid cruises and a trip to Bimini courtesy of Bimini Bay resort. Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe made the announcement during a luncheon in their honour in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Watch a news report of the event here.

TIO Networks Corp, today announced that is has licensed its bill payment technology to BAF Global Group Ltd of The Bahamas. This partnership marks the first international deployment of TIO’s payment processing solution.

Michael DarvilleThe newly established Ministry of Grand Bahama is in negotiations with the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) to tackle one of the business community’s biggest concerns—electricity costs.

Minister of Grand Bahama Michael Darville says discussions with GBPA are “ongoing” and that the government is committed to exploring alternative energy sources such as natural gas, solar power and ocean thermal energy.

Grand Bahama’s industrial sector has long been challenged by the price of power on the island, with some companies running their own generators, rather than relying on the island grid.

Minister Darville acknowledges that this is a major concern and could be stunting the sector’s growth, saying: “The industrial sector and power go hand in hand.”

“The growth and expansion of facilities are directly related to the reduction of the cost of electricity. We lower the cost [and] we would see an expansion in the industrial sector. It is an issue that is ongoing, we realize it is a real challenge.”
