The Bahamas Financial Services Board has announced that an independent Blue Ribbon Panel has selected a partner of the law firm of McKinney, Bancroft & Hughes, April Nicole Turner as the Financial Services Industry’s Executive of the Year.

April Nicole TurnerAliya Allen, chief executive officer and executive director of the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB), has announced that an independent Blue Ribbon Panel has named April Nicole Turner as the Financial Services Industry’s Executive of the Year April Nicole Turner.

A partner of the law firm of McKinney, Bancroft & Hughes, April Turner also serves as chief operating officer at affiliate MB&H Corporate Services Ltd–a licensee under the Financial and Corporate Service Providers Act.

In submitting the nomination, her colleagues say that Turner has demonstrated a keen understanding of the trends and challenges in the financial services industry, both locally and globally and this has allowed her to develop a vision for the future growth of MB&H that reflects the dynamic and innovative nature of the industry.

The Minister of Financial Services, who also has responsibility for international trade, Ryan Pinder, held discussions with director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy October 24 in Brussels.

The Minister discussed the way forward for The Bahamas’ accession to the WTO.

The two heads also discussed the steps taken by the Bahamas government since its second accession Working Party Meeting with members of the WTO in Geneva in June of this year, and the preparation being made for the third Working Party Meeting scheduled for March 2013.

Although things are returning to normal on the major islands of The Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, according to government officials, some cruise lines' private islands still require substantial clean-up efforts before they can re-open for business.

30 October, 2012 (Cruise Critic UK) — As areas on the U.S. east coast prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism says things are nearly back to normal in Nassau and Freeport, where minimal damage was sustained.

Cuban flagHAVANA (AP) – Residents of Cuba’s second-largest city of Santiago remained without power or running water Monday, four days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall as the island’s deadliest storm in seven years, ripping rooftops from homes and toppling power lines.

Across the Caribbean, the storm’s death toll rose to 69, including 52 people in Haiti, 11 in Cuba, two in the Bahamas, two in the Dominican Republic, one in Jamaica and one in Puerto Rico.

Cuban authorities have not yet estimated the economic toll, but the Communist Party newspaper Granma reported there was “severe damage to housing, economic activity, fundamental public services and institutions of education, health and culture.”

Tue Oct 30, 2012 (Reuters) – NYSE Euronext said it plans to test a new contingency plan to help resume stalled U.S. equity trading, and added that its famed trading floor is not yet damaged by Sandy, one of the biggest storms to hit the United States.

U.S. stock markets will be closed for a second day on Tuesday, as Wall Street turns its attention to whether markets would be able to resume functioning on the month’s final trading day on Wednesday.

Castaway CayThe chances of the eye of a massive hurricane passing over a spit of land in the middle of the Caribbean are as remote as finding the proverbial needle in a haystack, but that appears to be exactly what happened Friday to Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island.

Hurricane Sandy cut a deadly swath through the Caribbean last week, slamming through Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and finally the Bahamas before heading north and eventually to our area.

AP STOCK PHOTOSaturday, 27 October 2012 (Belfast Telegraph) — A British investment bank boss was killed trying to repair a window shutter as Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas, it has emerged.
Timothy Fraser-Smith, 66, chief executive of Deltec Bank & Trust since 2000, fell from the roof of his home in wealthy Lyford Cay late on Thursday, police said.

Mr Fraser-Smith’s death was one of 43 across the Caribbean.

He joined Deltec in June 2000 as chief executive, the company’s website said.

Mr Fraser-Smith had joined Grindlays Bank, London in 1972 and since worked in a variety of corporate banking functions across the world, including Lebanon, Pakistan, Greece, New York and Hong Kong.
