Hurricane Irene relief programme receives donations

BTC and New York Consulate presented the National Emergency Management Agency with cheques to support victims of the Category 3 Hurricane Irene, which struck in August last year.

The chief executive officer of The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTC), Geoff Houston, presented the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with a cheque for $250,000 to go toward the Hurricane Irene relief programme.

The presentation was made earlier this week in Nassau.


Consulate General of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas in New York, Dr Rhonda Chipman-Johnson also presented a $4,135 cheque to the relief programme.

Dr Chipman-Johnson explained that the money was collected from Bahamians living in New York.

Secretary to the Cabinet, Anita Bernard on behalf of The Bahamas government, expressed appreciation for the donations, which will go toward helping those affected by the Category 3 Hurricane Irene, which struck in August 2011.

The 2012 conference season gets underway with several key events for financial services providers to be held in The Bahamas and across the region.

The Bahamas' presence at the Shanghai Expo, as well as investment ventures such as Baha Mar and bilateral government projects in trade and infrastructure have helped to raise the profile of the jurisdiction as a holiday destination for the Chinese.
